Folks
Folks are different from people. I like folks Whose teeth show too much when they smile But they laugh wholeheartedly And they have crow’s feet around their eyes. You can tell they Might have drank too much coffee over the years Or worked a little too hard Or maybe stayed out too late But they’re genuine. I like folks With history etched onto their arms Blurred into skin over the years And a memory that stretches for miles. Where they can tell you about The places they’ve Been, fought, seen, built, or destroyed. Folks who can regale events like they just happened Even if it was five years ago or fifty. I like folks with long braids down their backs And paint-splattered smocks Or dingy overalls they still work in. Folks who put their heart into every little nook and cranny Of what they do. Folks are different from people In that they’re the ones that keep us smiling. |
La Gente (in Spanish)
