The Nature of Nature
The rolling hills of Ireland enticed me, and made my mind wander off into places it had never reached before. The crisp, fresh air filled my lungs and filled my soul with a happiness that could never be found in the polluted air of my previous inhabitance. I honestly did not want to leave the spot where I stood. It felt right to be in the middle of true, untamed nature. It felt right to be the one being controlled by its strong winds and abnormally luring scents. Nature took away all of my worries, and all the small, trivial things that had consumed my life before were useless compared to the beauty of it.
As I walked along the small trail that led through one of the greenest forests I had ever seen, I noted and enjoyed the fact that the only evidence another human had been here was the barely noticeable footprints of someone else enjoying this land. At that moment, I was alone. I didn’t want to be crowded by other people who were using nature simply to look at it, like a lion, stuck in a cage at a zoo. They didn’t see that nature should be witnessed and experienced by being in the middle of it. Nature isn’t something that people have the right to capture and contain. It is simply there; no person can contain what is simply there.
Continuing my walk, I looked over towards the setting sun. The sun in Ireland looked a lot different from the sun I had normally seen. It seemed brighter- maybe not in a literal sense, but brighter in a sense that it made the atmosphere of the land seem happier. Despite the chilling winds and almost constant rain, Ireland had a way of erasing bad or uneasy emotions. When one is at the mercy of nature, one tends to forget about one’s silly emotions and focuses on the rare beauty that they are witnessing.
My walked ended at the base of a tree. The tree was tall and covered with green moss. Each intricate swirl reminded me of the simplicity of nature. It reminded me that even in the smallest of things, I could find some sort of beauty. The shade that the tree provided enveloped me, and my only thought was to sit and enjoy my surroundings. My mind slowly went blank, and all of my petty worries drifted off into oblivion.
I will never forget Ireland. In the middle of its land, I was able to take advantage of the nature that had surrounded me and forget all the troubles that I had originally thought I could never rid myself of. It amazed me that something as big and vast as nature itself could somehow affect me on that large of a scale. I had always thought nature was something brutal, and people were meant to fear it. I do agree that nature should be respected, but maybe not feared. Nature is a medicine. It can bring light to the darkest of situations. I know now that when I lose hope in something, I can look to nature for the answer, and I know nature will give it to me.
